Eden for Wildfox

Inspired by and incorporating nature, Theresa who is the designer of all things beautiful at her Wildfox etsy store. A fellow NSCAD student, her designs still follow trends and are still contemporary but are also like little pieces of art in themselves and finely crafted with some strange source materials. If someone told me they had a pair of earrings made from seaweed I would probably look at them strange and start wondering what that would smell like but as you'll see here, pine cones, sticks, bark, flowers, herbs all come together to make a beautiful series. Thanks to my model Eden who is currently Miss Eastern Nova Scotia Globe.

When it comes to pageants, Victoria Grant is short on experience, but already long on success.

The Coldbrook teenager was named Miss Canada Petite at a national pageant in Toronto, the first time she’d ever competed.

“I’m still shocked, it hasn’t sunk in yet,” Grant said. “My first year is called my reign and I’ll attend some events across Canada, then my second year I’ll go to an international petite pageant. This year’s was in Bangkok so I’m kind of excited to see where the next one is.”

Entry in Miss Canada Petite is limited to contestants five-foot-six and under. Grant is five-four.

“I just came across it, and read their mission statement about supporting non-profit organizations and charities, and that’s something I’ve always wanted to do, so I decided to sign up and try it out,” she said. “They don’t really accept shorter people in (most) pageants, the contestants are like five-eight, five-nine.”

The Miss Canada Petite competition was held in conjunction with the Miss Canada Globe and Miss Teen Canada Globe contests, with about 55 girls in all taking part. There were talent, evening gown and swimsuit competitions and it was during rehearsals for the show that Grant for the first time wore high heels with a bikini.

“I thought I was going to be really intimidated but we did a lot of training during the week for your self-confidence. I wasn’t nervous at all, which was weird for me,” said Grant, who often has trouble shopping for clothes, though she has a closet full. “Everything’s too long or too big or something. It was a two-week process, because the first week was for out-of-Ontario girls to get training on what the whole pageant would be about. Then the second week was pageant week.”

The contestants got professional advice on how to look when making appearances, and for the pageant had personal hair and makeup artists.

“It’s kind of cool to sit back and relax and have someone do it for you,” said Grant, who for a week had to share with three other contestants a hotel room with one bathroom, one mirror and one electrical outlet in the bathroom.

“A lot of the girls were stressed out because they had a bunch of stuff in their room, and there were four girls to a room. They had a bunch of gowns, shoes, you name it. It was pretty stressful, but I think we all kind of bonded that way too. I made so many friends, it was a great experience.”

Victoria Grant looks forward in working with her Charity of choice-“Feed Nova Scotia”, a Canadian wide food bank organization. She has supported a lot of charities so far this year and looks forward in helping many others.

A Nursing Student Crowned

Vanessa LittlerLast year, Vanessa Littler was one of many talented nursing students studying at Cape Breton University. Fast forward a few months later, and Vanessa is still a bright student at CBU, but she’s doing it while wearing a crown.

Vanessa was born and raised in Glace Bay, N.S., where she still resides today. This past spring she was offered a once of a lifetime opportunity to compete in the Miss Canada Globe Pageant, an internationally recognized pageant that places importance on education and equality for all women in Canada. As a result of a bit of dabbling in modeling, a pageant scout sought her out as she believed Vanessa was a good candidate for the pageant. The scout was right. Vanessa was awarded the regional title of Miss Northern Nova Scotia, and represented the area in the pageant this summer.

The Miss Canada Globe Pageant was the first pageant that Vanessa has ever participated in. With a warm Cape Breton personality, and a sparkling smile, Vanessa greeted the judges. Quickly after their first introduction, the girls began the pageant process and were whittled down to the top 10. After nine girls were called, Vanessa was getting nervous. “I was sure I didn’t make it because my name starts with a “V” and the names went in alphabetical order. I was the last to be called for everything!”

After competing in an evening gown and swimsuit event, Vanessa was again passed through to the final five round of judging. “At this point I was extremely nervous because the top five had to answer a question on stage,” says Vanessa. “After hearing my question I smiled and kind of forgot I was on stage. I answered as if I was talking to a friend…I let the audience see my true self. They laughed and I felt good about it.”

All of the hard work and training that Vanessa put into the pageant paid off, because she was crowned as first runner-up for the Miss Canada Globe Pageant. This title didn’t last for long though. The winner of the pageant could not accept the responsibilities of being crowned the winner, so next in line, was CBU’s Vanessa Littler.

When asked how she felt when she was crowned Miss Canada Globe a few weeks after the competition, she said, “To keep it simple…shocked. I’m excited that I now have the opportunity to not only represent Canada at Miss Globe Worldwide, but also act as a role model, visit and spend time with various charities. This title gives me the chance to further my community involvement, and I plan to do so.”

After her whirlwind competition in Toronto, Vanessa was thrown right back into the action as school started again in September. Being a BSc nursing student is challenging in many ways, but CBU nursing faculty work to enhance and support student learning. Vanessa appreciates all the opportunities CBU has to offer, noting that at CBU, you’re nut just a student to your professors, but a person whom they care for. “The class sizes are fairly small in my program, so you get to know your professors,” she says. “It’s more than just taking notes and listening in class. Everyone is able to interact and discuss topics openly.”
